Looking to experience some of Colorado’s hikes, but have already conquered many of those in Summit County? Here are a few that we’ve recently hiked that are worth checking out this summer…
Lily Pad Lakes is a hike for all ages and skill levels. This beautiful hike has you crossing rivers on handmade bridges, logs, and rocks, which all lead to two extremely beautiful lakes in the high country. The first lake you come across is typically filled with lily pads and if you go later in the season the lily pads bloom with gorgeous yellow flowers. Only a few steps from the first lake, you will come across a second, larger lake. Both have plenty of large boulders and logs for you to sit, relax, and take in the scenery.
Length: 1.6 miles each way, 3.2 miles round trip
Directions: Take I-70 exit 205 north on Hwy 9, take a left on Wildernest Road (across from Wendy’s) continue on Wildernest Road by taking a left at Lowe’s. Wildernest Road turns into Ryan Gulch Road, follow to the very top, where you will see parking on your left, the trailhead is up the dirt path that is blocked from motorized vehicles.
Booth Falls is a more strenuous hike with over 1,100 feet in elevation gain. The trail winds through groves of aspens, large forested areas, open meadows, and a few river crossings. Just a short distance up the trail, you can look back across the Vail Valley to view waterfalls cascading over rock faces and many ski runs at the Vail Ski Resort. While this hike is mainly uphill the entire way, the reward of the 60+ foot drop of Booth Falls is well worth the effort. If you are so inclined, you can continue another 3+ miles to Booth Lake.
Length: 1.9 miles each way, 3.8 miles round trip
Directions: Take I-70 west towards Vail, take exit 180 at East Vail. Go west to Booth Falls Road and take a right, follow the road to the top where the road dead ends. There is not much parking, but if that is full, go back down the road and park at the school.
Hanging Lake is considered a difficult hike with approximately 1,000 feet of gain in elevation. Winding through Deadhorse Creek Canyon, the trail is rocky but does follow the creek, giving you many places to stop, catch your breath, and enjoy the flowing waters. Towards the top of the hike, you will climb up a rocky hillside that has handrails to a wood-planked boardwalk that crosses over the picturesque 1.5-acre Hanging Lake. Bridal Veil Falls flow into Hanging Lake, which is a perfect place to take a picture or two. Due to the sensitive ecosystem of the lake, dogs are not permitted, no swimming or feeding the trout/wildlife.
Length: 1.2 miles each way, 2.4 miles round trip
Directions: Take I-70 west through Vail to the Grizzly Creek exit, get back on I-70 heading east approximately 4-5 miles, and get off at the Hanging Lake exit.
